Three Minutes or Less: Lesbians in Cinema: Rotten Tomatoes Show
Posted on July 11th, 2010 by admin
We asked Alonso Duralde, a man who’s literally written a book on gay cinema, to give us the history of lesbians in film in three minutes or less. A frequent guest reviewer for The Rotten Tomatoes Show, Duralde explains how indie movies like 1985’s “Desert Hearts” eventually expanded the portrayal of lesbian characters in American movies beyond double-crossing, homicidal vampires.

@MasterClipEditor – …
@MasterClipEditor – Maybe you’re just looking in the wrong places. A lot of the indies I’ve seen (most recently The Kids Are All Right) have done a fairly good job, imo. Those films are harder to find, but usually worth seeking out.
Then again, with a name like MasterClipEditor, I’m guessing you probably knew this and my response was rendered useless. Oh well!

I have to be honest …
I have to be honest and disagree with Alonso’s thesis. Modern films still rarely take lesbian relationships seriously.

hollywood has …
hollywood has usually depicted gays as victims or villians. if they arent those characters, the public wont like it. a victory for gays in film is when they arent stereotypically destructive, suicidal, or harmful. for now, they are depicted in film as characters we ought to feel pity for.
