How to release an independent film in theaters without a distributor?

Posted on January 17th, 2011 by admin

How can you release an independent film in theaters without going through a major studio distributor. And ballpark how much would it cost (disregarding the cost of the production of the film).

You would basically have to become your own distributor, going to small art-house theaters around the country and selling your product. That’s VERY difficult. How much it costs would depend on how widely you distribute it, how many prints you make, how successful your travels are, etc.

The more common root is to do the film festival circuit. Submit your film to every festival that will look at it and it will play in theaters around the country. If it’s good enough, you may get a deal that way with a small (or possibly large) distributor. You can also use the opportunity (if your film gets accepted) to establish relationships with the theater owners who are working with the film festival to try to get distribution at that theater later on (that would be a tough sell, but not impossible).

There have been a handful of films that have traveled with very few prints. Those are cult classics. American Astronaut and Rocky Horror Picture Show come to mind. It’s a VERY tough road for a film. If you can’t get your movie into film festivals, chalk up the production and efforts as a learning experience and go back to the drawing board and try again.

Good luck.

EDIT: I suppose, if you really want, you could do it through Fathom Events. They basically will show anything at a bunch of theaters around the country if you pay them enough money. They typically cater to corporate presentations or 1-night only events, but I’m sure if you pay them, they’ll put your movie on as many screens as you want. It would be a REALLY expensive way to distribute the movie though. I don’t really know how much, but I imagine it would be prohibitive.

What do the theaters do with the movie reels when they are done showing in theaters? Or do they even use Reels anymore what have they updated to? Do they just get thrown away or kept on "file" so to speak?

The films are sent back to the distributor.

What happens to the money movie theaters make off of ticket sales?

Posted on January 4th, 2011 by admin

I’ve always been told that movie theaters don’t make money off of ticket sales. They make money off of their concession stands and other stuff.

So what do they do with the money they make off of ticket sales?

A large percentage of ticket sales goes back to the studio. The theatre keeps some, but it’s a small percentage. That’s why it costs so much to get a drink at the movie theatre: it’s a way bigger source of income for the theatre.

do west end theaters take students for work experience?

Posted on November 22nd, 2010 by admin

I am in transition year in school and I have to go on work experience. Would the theaters in the west end take 15 year old students for a week? Something like phantom of the opera or wicked? Or do you have to be over 18 for them to let you?

I don’t think so. try a amateur dramatic club

Are there any theaters in the DFW area of Texas that actually show closed-captioned movies?

Posted on November 18th, 2010 by admin

I realize that most theaters offer listening devices (mostly just headphones), but I have a hearing aid to help with the volume problem. I still have difficulty making sense of what I am hearing at times, especially when watching tv/movies. Unfortunately, this usually means that I have to wait for the DVD to come out to enjoy a movie. For once, I’d like to go out and be able to enjoy the theater experience. Any suggestions out there?

The AMC Northpark offers some closed captioned movies. So does the AMC Valley View. Right now, closed captioning is available for "Due Date."

It wouldn’t surprise me if other AMC theaters also offer this.

When a movie is in limited theaters, will it still be available on dvd everywhere?

Posted on October 24th, 2010 by admin

There is a movie I want to see, Catfish. But it is only in limited theaters, and it won’t be playing in any theaters around me. Will it still come out on dvd & be available pretty much everywhere?

Eventually, it will be available, though you may have to order it, like from Amazon, or BestBuy. I do that all the time when classics are released on DVD/Blu-ray.

I’ve only gone to movie theaters at night and late-night for new releases and they are PACKED! I was wondering…if anyone has gone to a new release movie at 11am noon-ish, is it packed as it would be at night?

Yes.

Whenever there is a big release they will always be packed.

Does anyone know any techno songs the start with the THX sound they use in theaters before a movie starts?

Posted on October 16th, 2010 by admin

Im just guessing this song dates early 2000. Its a techno song. However the uniqueness about the song is it starts with the THX sound system the plays right before most movies start in the theaters. Thats all i can remember any help would be great. Thanks!

The THX sound is called "Deep Note".

Here’s the wiki that shows what music it’s been used in.

Since you’re looking for a techno song, my guess is it’s the Mega Lo Mania mix of Mylene Farmer’s song "California". I found one version of it on youtube.
