tips for childrens theatre?

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 by admin

im working on this unit in grade 11 drama…and i could really use some tips from any experienced actors out there

A good play to work on would be Sondheim’s "Into the Woods". "Into the Woods" intermingles most of the fairy tale characters of the Brothers Grimm into a clever and deep concept, incorporating the many facets and themes of childhood and the raising of children. Basically, this whole play is about children.

Voice lessons before getting into the childrens theatre?

Posted on March 1st, 2010 by admin

I want to start performing and getting involved with my local childrens theatre. I do forensics on my school team, which is where you pick a piece to act out in front of judges and they judge you. Theres many different categorys and I usually do group acting with my friend. We do fairly well and this past season we got very close to qualifying for state. I love the thrill of being nervous before performing and watching the audience react to what we do and say. But to be involved with my childrens theatre Im pretty sure it will involve singing and I am not too confident with my singing voice. I am 13 btw and female if it matters. So should I get some singing lessons first or see if I can just do acting with the program? I would like to sing though. Any suggestions on where I could look for a voice teacher?

You don’t need voice lessons for children s theater but THEY NEVER HURT. If you can get voice lessons at any age it can only help you. Typically, you won’t need voice lessons until you’re competing with a more mature, experienced pool of actors/actresses, and even then not everybody frankly needs voice lessons, though most people should have them. Freddie Mercury never had voice lessons….but not everybody is him. Point is, get lessons if you can, but you should be okay as long as you practice on your own or with a group. Always try to work on songs that challenge your range too, that will make you a more versatile person.

I am photographing a theatre production and was intending on using my E3 with Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 am I right?

Posted on February 27th, 2010 by admin

I am in the middle of my photography HND and a friend of mine has asked me to shoot her childrens theatre school productions. Will the Sigma be fast enough for the low light? I would love the new zuiko 12-60mm but it’s so pricey.

The issue here is the iso rating, which will need to be very high (ISO 800 plus) to shoot handheld at around f2.8. Correct any colour casts later in Photoshop if you want to. Focus on the issue, not expensive equipment. Keeping shutter speeds at 1/60 sec or better for handheld stuff will require this high iso rating, and it will lead to increased grain. Nothing you can do about it, just go for it. Don’t shoot at low iso or all your shots will be low shutter speed and blurred.

“Oklahoma,” “Annie Get Your Gun” & “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” Children’s Theater

Posted on February 26th, 2010 by admin

Once of my regular clients (www.langevinproductions.com) recently hired me for a new contact to shoot and edit live theater performances. This clip is from February 11, 2010. It is a children’s theater production of Oklahoma,” “Annie get Your Gun” & ” Seven brides for Seven Brothers.” The performance was at All Hallows School in La Jolla, California and consists of children under age 13. I chose these particular songs to give a feel for the entire event. For more information on my video services, check out my web site at www.jamesvcosta.com.

What qualities are directors looking for in a musical theatre audition?

Posted on February 25th, 2010 by admin

I seem to have trouble getting lead callbacks recently in my childrens theatre. Even when i do well i get ensemble callbacks nowadays.
Is it really because I dont have leads on my resume?

What are directors looking for other than dancing and singing well?

What are some tips you have to get these qualities?

Should I over act, i usually dont because i think it makes people seem
unrealisitic but should I start?

Any other advice?

They are looking for someone who loves what they’re doing. They know that these people will give 110%. They look for people with personality, and an open heart. Also a kind person, a people person. Don’t over act, that’s one thing that people don’t like, it makes you seem to fake, like you’re trying too hard.

Not having leads on your resume might be a little factor, if it is even relevant. They’re not looking for how many leads you’ve gotten, but how much experience you have. The more plays you’ve done, they more they are reassured that you can stand up to the pressure of Hell Week and other actors. As long as you don’t say you’re doing this because you want to be famous, you should be fine =] Just wait for your shining moment =]
