What colleges and universities offer a graduate or undergraduate major in "community theater"?

Posted on March 31st, 2011 by admin

I know there used to be one at Orono, and may still be. Mostly, I am interested in the course titles and reading lists.

It would be better to minor in theatre and major in something more mainstream so you can get a job.

Which is better, acting classes or community theater?

Posted on March 27th, 2011 by admin

Some people have told me that taking drama classes is a better way to expand your acting ability, other have told me community theater is the way to go. What’s your opinion?

as always, it depends upon who’s in charge of what. If it’s an acting class you want a gifted, knowledgeable teacher/coach who is able to expose the student to a genuine variety of technique, bringing out the best in each student. If it’s community theatre, you don’t want the cliche ego-driven, meglomaniacal board of directors and officers whose only desire is to see themselves always on stage, whether they’re right for the roles or not – which is too often the case – jealously guarding their positions of power at the expense of letting new blood into the group. it’s rare to find a good acting class and just as rare to find an equitable, fair group running a community theatre with the best interests of the show at heart and not their own selfish desires. you have to shop around if you live in a city that is big enough to have that luxury. If not you need a thick enough skin to get as much as you can out of the local scene until you can move to a larger city. unfortunately theatre is an dgo-driven pursuit, and there are healthy egos and those that are not. you have to sort the wheat from the chaff.

can i work as a nurse and act in community theater?

Posted on March 25th, 2011 by admin

can i work as a nurse and act in community theater i work a 12 hour shift 3 days a week so i am wondering if it is possible?

probably not, theater is extremely time consuming, more so than other types of acting. rehearsals
are every day for 1 to 3 or 4 weeks and then you have the run of the play. if your shift is during the day,
no.

Can an Actor’s Equity member still participate in their local community theater ?

Posted on March 23rd, 2011 by admin

Even if it is volunteer community theater?
Why are there mixed answers? I am confused.

Of course – the Union is there to protect you in professional work, they’re not interested in amateur stuff. It’s supposed to be that if you are NOT an Equity member you can’t do professional work, though in practice that isn’t always so these days.

Looking for theater plays which involve a pie in the face!?

What is the name of the movie in the sprint commercial shown in the movie theaters?

Posted on March 15th, 2011 by admin

What is the name of the movie in the sprint commercial shown in the movie theaters with a guy in white and a guy in black who are brothers? The slogan is movies don’t interrupt you, don’t interrupt them. The voice over has a lady saying something about a tennis match.
Also, the guys are in armor (white/black), and the guy in black turns into black dust and disappears.

the 2010 version of Clash of the Titans, the two characters are Zeus in white (Liam Neeson) and Hades in black (Ralph Fiennes).

What determines the number of theaters a movie opens in?

Posted on March 14th, 2011 by admin

For example, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows opened in 4125 theaters. What determines that number? Does each theater decide if they wanna show a movie or do the distributors decide to which and how many theaters they want a movie to be shown in? Obviously it has something to do with popularity, but the highest-grossing movies haven’t necessarily opened in the most number of theaters.

It’s sort of a combination, at least at the theater I work at. We negotiate with the distributers and the other movie theater in town and sort of alternate big name movies. Also, if a distributer wants us to open a movie on two of our screens instead of one and we say no, they can decide to give it to our competition. Theaters can also request smaller movies that don’t get big openings or delcine movies they don’t want. I’m at a locally owned theater though, I’m not sure how it’s decided for chains.
